Where I can use SwissKnife V3?

SwissKnife is a utility to manage your mass storage devices of IDE, SCSI, and ATAPI class under Internal, External interfaces like parallel, USB,PCMCIA and Firewire (IEEE 1394). This allows you to view the information about the partitions available in the Hard Disk and allows you to partition and Quick Format the devices.

What are the types of interfaces through which devices are detected?

This utility detects devices connected in the Interfaces such as IDE, Parallel Port,PCMCIA, SCSI, USB and FireWire (IEEE 1394).

How many partitions we can create?

In each devices, four primary partition is allowed and up to 23 logical drives can be created. However windows 'My Computer" cannot recognize partitions beyond 24.

What is the minimum size of a partition we can create?

The minimum size of a partition created is 32 MB for FAT16 file system and for the FAT32 file system it is 550 MB.

How I can create a partition?

Select the partition type and file system. Also enter the volume label.(This option is not applicable for extended partition.)Default volume label is SwissKnife .Set the partition as active if required provided the partition is Primary. Then drag the slider control according to the required size. You can also specify the required size through the edit box or through the spin button. After that click the 'create' button.

How I can delete a partition?

Select the partition you want to delete from the list and then click the 'delete' button on the partition and quick format window. Also a right mouse click on the selected partition will prompt a push button that will appear with the text 'delete' on it. Click on the button and the selected partition will be deleted. You can also delete a selected partition by pressing the 'delete' key on the keyboard.

Can I create partitions on all the devices connected to the system ?

Partition creation is not allowed for booted drive and CD-ROM class.

Can I create more than one extended partition?

No, You can create only one extended partition on a Device.

Can I create more than one primary partition?

Yes, You can create maximum of four primary partition.

Can I delete the extended partition while logical drives exists ?

No, You cannot delete extended partition while logical drives exists.

What are the file systems available for partition creation ?

You can create partitions with the FAT16 and FAT32 file systems.

Can I create logical drives up to the full size of the extended?

You can create logical drives up to the full size of the extended partition.

Note:
Partition creation is limited to 23 for a single device. However 'My Computer" cannot
recognize partitions beyond 23.

Can I create logical drives if there is no extended partition?

No, A extended partition has to be created before creating logical partitions

How can I know about the cylinder and head information of the disk?

Click on the 'more Info' button in the device information window and you will get the
information about the Cylinder, Head and Sectors per track of the device connected.

What are the information displayed by the device information module, about a partition?

The information displayed include the volume, partition type, file system and media type.

Can I edit or modify or move existing partitions?

No, but you cannot increase or decrease or move the size of existing partitions. You are allowed to delete existing partitions

Is there any risk while deleting partitions?

All the data in the disk of that deleted partitions will be lost while deleting partitions.

How I can identify the different partitions in the graphical representation?

The legends on the screen denote the color of each type of partition.

After pressing 'Create' button to create a partition can I cancel it?

No. You cannot cancel the process. But you can delete the unwanted partition after it's creation.

What is the purpose of driver settings?

This option is used to change the command line options of the driver. These parameters may be altered only if the driver fails to install or if the driver exhibits a problem.

Is the driver settings option available for all interfaces?

No. This option is applicable only for OnSpec Parallel port host adapters.

Do I need to format the disk after creating partition(s)?

No .The disk is formatted automatically while creating partition(s).

Does it require to restart the system to take changes to effect?

No. 'My computer' dynamically updates the partition(s) created by SwissKnife in Windows 95b/98/Me. For Windows 95/95a partitions will be updated only after rebooting the system. For Windows NT/2000/XP you need to restart the system or open and close disk manager so that the partitions are updated dynamically.

Can I create Floppy Format for fixed devices?

No. Floppy Format supports only Removable media device(s).

Windows 2000/XP/NT provides Disk Manager tool which allows me to create and manage my disk, why I need CompuApps SwissKnife for Windows 2000/XP/NT?

1. You can't use Disk Management tool allows to create FAT32 partitions more than 30GB. and 2. Disk Management tool has limited option for various cluster size creation for partitions. Where SwissKnife allows you to do both of the above.
